Dressed for Success

I was on vacation when the whole Southwest Airlines thing erupted, vaulting Kyla Ebbert/Setara Qassim to international celebrity, so forgive the tardy entry into this discussion. I'm curious to know how Wicked Women view these incidents of airline personnel suddenly policing the moral suitability of women's attire. Kyla is pictured here in the outfit that almost got her kicked off a flight (in case you were under a rock the week it happened and didn't see her flash her panties on the Today show). I wouldn't dress like that even if I were built like that because I want someone to work a little harder to see my underpants. But my advice to the purse-lipped flight attendant who raised the issue: Spend more time replacing all the inflight mags with the crossword puzzles already filled in and less time worrying about some girl showing off her attributes. Does she look cheap and cheesy? Hell, yeah. But until the Taliban wins an election here, we have a right to look as sleazy as we want to. That said, if Kyla were my daughter, I would explain to her that if she dresses like a cheap tart, some people will tend to treat her like a cheap tart, whether they have a right to or not. The problem is that so many young women think they have to look like this to be attractive and to get attention, and the media keep proving them right. Kyla got more attention for dressing like this than for anything else she's ever done in her life. Google her, and you'll see her name turn up more than a quarter-million times in less than a month. When is the last time a woman got this famous this fast for doing something that didn't involve serving up her breasts like a free buffet?

Unfortunately, women dress like that because they get more attention from guys. If you put a conservatively dressed woman next to her, the cheap tart would probably get the most attention, from both men and women. It's a shame.

I asked dh what's the first thing he thought of when he looked at her. He grinned and said, "quick fuck or one night stand."

I've worn mini-skirts, although certainly not that short. That thing is a band-aide, not a skirt. But even when I do, I still try to make it classy, not slutty. I want a guy to look at me and think pretty or maybe even sexy, but not easy. It's too bad today's girls seem to associate pretty with easy.

You are SO right! What blew me clean away was her Mom telling her the outfit wasn't inappropriate. If one of my daughters dressed like that we'd have a SERIOUS chat. Here's just another example of 'what not to wear': http://www.glamour.com/dosdonts/daily/dailydonts_20070924

Omg, today's don't is hysterical! Yes, women actually do show their ass in skirts! I went to roller derby recently and my fave skater, named Punkin Pie, wore a skirt like that with her ass cheeks showing, but she was being ironic.
Yeah, Katydid, I was surprised the mother saw nothing wrong with her daughter's outfit too. I'd be throwing a sheet over my daughter if she insisted on wearing that outfit in public.

as someone who has almost been thrown out of an airport for my appearance, i have to say, airport security be damned, i would have kicked someone's ass. seriously.

it's no one's bidness what anyone chooses to wear. don't like it, don't look.

of course, i got hassled in my sportbike days for looking like this:

...so maybe my perspective is a bit warped, but frankly, i dress how i please and i don't care what other people think. their opinions of me are none of my concern.

edit- my "pre-sportbike days" as in, pre- helmet- no hairstyle possible days!

Yeeehaw! Finally got a rise out of Marshmallow. I can't believe anyone had the guts to hassle you at the airport. What did they say, were you scaring the pilots? Seriously, though, I agree no one has the right to tell you how to dress. They will, however, interpret and respond to the way you dress anyway, whether they have the right to or not. And you are definitely making a statement with your look, which sez to me at the very least counterculture artist and tough chick who is not afraid of a little pain, inflicting or receiving. Ergo, I would not fuck with you. But I would follow you around for a while and enjoy the walking work of art you are. I think people do make a statement with the way they look. I just don't think a lot of people are conscious of what they're saying, especially young women who are slaves to misogynistic fashion that makes them look like hookers.

I didn't see anything wrong with what you had on, Marshmellow. Did the airport have a problem with your tattoes?
