Vagina Dentata: Pussy as Predator Smart and dangerous, the vagina dentata is a sharklike predator, a killing and eating machine cruising for unsuspecting phallic prey. Latin for toothed vagina, this term refers to early folk tales about the dangers for men of sex with women. Intentional or not, the term is deeply gynophobic and misogynist, though it is oddly empowering. I suspect that if I were a woman alone at the mercy of rapacious males in a primitive culture, I would have promoted the idea that I had teeth in my vagina that could bite off any penis that entered without my consent.
